About Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing, also known as a laser peel, is similar to chemical peeling -removing surface layers of skin but with the precision of a laser. These treatments at Bass Plastic Surgery are ablative, using the Sciton Erbium:YAG laser or Sciton Profractional fractional Erbium:YAG laser to aggressively target the wrinkles and acne scars embedded deep in the facial skin. Ablative lasers, like the Erbium:YAG, vaporize thin layers of skin leaving a raw surface that heals over a few days. As the skin begins to heal, it also remodels to add new collagen with a stronger, smoother layer that has fewer wrinkles and scars. Modern resurfacing lasers, administered by plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bass, allow gradable treatments from very light to very aggressive depending on the severity of wrinkling, making the treatments customizable for each patient's needs. Less aggressive laser treatments are also available at our New York, NY practice, and patients can feel free to schedule a consultation to learn more.
"I had a breast reduction with Dr. Bass in July. Everything from the consultation to the follow up appointments to the office staff was wonderful. I'm so pleased with the results and should've done this years ago. Dr. Bass is attentive and very thorough. The office staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend Dr. Bass!!!"- Anonymous / Vitals / Oct 02, 2017

"Great Surgeon for Male Rhinoplasty - Dr. Bass performed my rhinoplasty along with a medically indicated septoplasty. I'm happy with the results, in terms of both look and function (i.e. snoring is cured, breathing noticeably improved).Male rhinoplasty is a difficult procedure to get right; my understanding is that it has a lower patient satisfaction rate than most cosmetic procedures. Thus, it is especially important to find the right surgeon with the knowledge, skill and experience, who can discuss expectations in a clear and honest manner. I fully recommend Dr. Bass.Dr. Bass is very patient and caring, especially for a surgeon of his renown. Pre-operative consultation was very thorough and he was generous with his time. Recovery from any nasal surgery is unpleasant and good post-operative care is important; again, I'm pleased with his & his staff's empathy and responsiveness. Finally, I'm grateful that Dr. Bass was able to accommodate my schedule and coordinate with her colleague Dr. Franziska Huettner (another outstanding surgeon), so I could have multiple procedures with the downtime of one."- A. / RealSelf / Aug 23, 2020

"professionalism personified... - When i was a younger lad, i was involved in a ghastly vehicular accident that led to life threatening injuries upon myself, along with an unfortunate fatality to the soul of another passenger, which casted an unfortunate lumbering energy that will forever encompass that distant night. after surviving the ordeal, i required a vast amount of plastic surgery to ameliorate all the wounds,..."- N. / RealSelf / Jan 24, 2017
Laser skin resurfacing with the ablative Erbium:YAG full field or fractional laser is a good option for patients who have severe skin trouble in their face, neck, chest, and hands, including:
- Moderate to deep lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes or lips
- Sun-damaged skin
- Scars and brown spots
What to Expect
Laser skin resurfacing is a quick procedure and is performed in our office. Every treatment is tailored to the patient's specific skin conditions and desired outcome. Full field treatments expose 100% of the surface in the treated areas. Fractional resurfacing uses thousands of tiny pinpoints of laser light which cumulate to only a portion of the total treated surface area. For less advanced problems or more sensitive skin like the neck, chest and hands, fractionated treatments provide rapid healing with less risk. Since only a fraction of the skin is directly treated with the laser, the surrounding untreated tissue promotes rapid healing. The skin’s wound healing response creates new collagen, adding firmness and resilience to the skin.
Immediately after the treatment the skin is raw and must be covered with ointment and washed several times a day. After a few days, the skin is healed but will remain red for a few weeks or longer depending on the strength of the treatment. This redness can be concealed with makeup. After treatment, patients should be careful to minimize direct sunlight and always wear sun protection since the skin will be sensitive in the first few months after the procedure. Most patients will see some results right away, but full results will appear several later as the skin finishes remodeling itself.
