About Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a great way to nonsurgically address skin concerns such as acne, wrinkles, fine lines, scarring, hyperpigmentation, and other issues. Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Bass, along with his skilled team, is able to offer light, medium, and deep chemical peels to treat different conditions. The treatment works by stripping away and breaking down the old, damaged surface layers of skin in order to present a new, healthier layer with improved appearance. Potential patients can schedule a consultation at Bass Plastic Surgery in New York, NY to learn more about which level of peel will be the most beneficial and leave their skin looking smoother.

best Candidates

The best candidates for chemical peels:

  • Are concerned about their skin tone or complexion
  • Have fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, or uneven texture
  • Desire long-term results
  • Desire fresher, healthier skin

What to Expect

Before any chemical peel, the skin will be assessed to determine the exact skin concerns and the most appropriate type of peel. The skin will be thoroughly cleansed and prepped prior to the peel. The length of treatment depends on the type of peel administered. Afterward, the patient will need to follow a skincare routine to protect the skin and enhance the effects of the peel. Additional treatments may be scheduled for maximum results.

Types of Peels

The superficial/light chemical peel is the mildest form of peel that works by turning over the outermost (epidermal) layer of skin.  Afterward, the skin will be slightly flsuhed but there will be no downtime. This procedure will be performed by one of our skilled nurses, PA's or licensed aestheticians. The patient’s skin may peel slightly for 3 – 5 days, and a series of treatments are usually required for optimal results.

A medium-depth peel removes several layers of skin to treat deeper skin problems. These peels are good for moderate lines and wrinkles, as well as moderate scars and other skin problems.  The recovery period is typically about 4 days for this peel, and the results will be more dramatic than a light peel. This procedure is performed by Dr. Bass.

A deep peel will be administered by Dr. Bass and produces the most dramatic results, so it is reserved for more serious skin conditions. Since it’s an invasive procedure, we usually use numbing gel, nerve blocks/local anesthesia, and/or mild oral sedation for smaller areas depending on patient preference. For larger areas and very deep peels, we offer IV sedation with the anesthesiologist.  Most patients will only need one peel to reach their aesthetic goals for wrinkles or two for acne scars.

Anticipated Results

Depending on the skin's condition and the level of peel, results will vary widely. However, in general, patients can expect to have smoother, brighter looking skin with fewer blemishes.  Patients will need to age to add back wrinkles that are cleared by the treatment.
