About Facelift Surgery

New York, NY board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bass performs a full spectrum of facial surgical treatments. One of the most sought after surgeries at Bass Plastic Surgery is a facelift. This surgery (also known as facialplasty) is the major facial reset for aging changes.  By tailoring out redundant, hanging skin, especially by the jowl, jawline and neck areas, facial shape is restored with clean lines and good jawline definition.  This gives you back the face you had with an all-encompassing younger look.

Dr. Bass will recommend a facelift technique that depends on your desired outcome, the health and condition of your skin, the degree of skin laxity, your lifestyle, age, and anatomy. For instance, a Bass Plastic Surgery patient who has severely aged skin that is very lax will likely require a full facelift. On the other hand, some patients may only need a mini-facelift to refine the skin in a focused area of the face or neck.  This is especially true in younger patients and patients who have already undergone a facelift years ago and only need revision of a portion of it.   Dr. Bass understands the complexities of facial aging and will help select an appropriate treatment option.  The overall goal is to produce a natural appearance that accents your best features and restores a youthful appearance.

Additional Options

Starting in the mid 30’s several signs of aging are manifested in the face, eye and neck areas. These include sagging of upper eyelid skin, bags under the eyes caused by fat, fine to deep wrinkling around the eyes, horizontal and vertical frown lines in the brow, drooping of the eyebrow, and fine wrinkling around the mouth.  As aging progresses, additional signs are noted including double chin, vertical cordlike bands of skin in front of the neck, drooping of the cheek with deepening of the nasolabial folds, and development of jowls. These changes of aging occur at a different rate for each person. With this in mind, Dr. Bass may also recommend a combination surgery, such as a facelift with :

  • Upper and/or lower blepharoplasty (eyelid lifts)
  • Cheek or chin implant
  • Endoscopic brow lift
  • Laser skin resurfacing
  • Liposuction
  • Fat transfer or fat grafting

At Bass Plastic Surgery, we base our treatment suggestions on your physical attributes and aesthetic preferences.  If Dr. Bass feels that a facelift is not warranted at this time, he will provide you with other options to get the look you want. If you have any questions about these procedures, please ask during the consultation.

Ideal Candidates

Men and women, who are suitable for facelift surgery, will have drooping skin on the face whether it be the face as a whole or the upper, mid, or lower face. A facelift can target one or more areas depending on your unique goals and desired outcomes.

It's also important to note that age doesn't always define the time in life to have facelift treatment. There are countless aspects and factors, in addition to numerous lift techniques depending on the cosmetic concerns of the patient. The lifting technique chosen will be different for patients who are in their 40's or 50's compared to those who are older, in their 60's and 70's. The condition of the skin is one of the key elements in the decision-making process. To be an ideal candidate, you should be physically healthy, a non-smoker, and have expectations that are realistic.

Our Surgical Approach

Your skin needs to be redraped gently, rather than pulled tightly in order to preserve a natural appearance. Dr. Bass will select a surgical technique based on the anatomic shape and degree of aging in your skin. This is where the experience and skill of the plastic surgeon are critical to achieving a pleasing result. When Dr. Bass plans your facial restoration, he will use a system of both linear and angular vectors for tissue repositioning. He may also recommend fat grafting to add volume in deflated areas in order to come as close as possible to the youthful appearance in your face.

Facelifts can rejuvenate and provide you with a fresh contour to the face and neck by removing excess skin and fat, and then re-suspend the deeper layers of the face.  Dr. Bass can achieve this through incisions hidden behind the hairline, in the natural skin creases, and in front of and behind the ears. Careful evaluation is necessary to select the correct procedure.  At Bass Plastic Surgery, we believe it is critical to have this type of thorough evaluation and planning to provide a customized treatment plan rather than a "cookie-cutter" approach.

What to Expect

No matter which facelift technique is selected, the primary goal is to generate a subtle and natural result.  Patients will receive IV sedation or general anesthesia from an anesthesiologist during the procedure. The duration of the procedure depends on the extent of the procedure needed, in addition to which other surgeries are performed at the same time.

Dr. Bass uses a number of advanced techniques during and after the procedure to minimize downtime for his patients. Once discharged to recover at home, our patients generally return to normal activities in 7-10 days up to 2 weeks. There will be bruising and swelling, and mild soreness.  Your recovery will largely relate to waiting for enough bruising and swelling to resolve so that it can be easily camouflaged with makeup.  You can expect a rested appearance with a smoother, more even look and without sagging skin.
