About Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is a procedure performed by New York, NY plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bass to reduce the fat and excess skin that causes hooding of the upper eyelids, as well as puffiness and bags under the eyes. This diminishes the tired or sad appearance, producing a more well-rested look. Dr. Bass is highly skilled and board-certified in plastic surgery, allowing him to address both the upper and lower eyelids in one surgical operation or separately as needed. At Bass Plastic Surgery, patients can meet with him to discuss their concerns and decide on the extent of their operation. A blepharoplasty can also be combined with a brow lift or laser treatments to produce the best results. Overall, our patients will have a more refreshed, rejuvenated appearance after undergoing eyelid surgery.

Ideal Candidates

The best candidates for eyelid surgery:

  • Have eyelid issues that cause them to look older
  • Have vision problems caused by droopy eyelids
  • Have droopy, downturned eyelids as a result of aging or genetics
  • Have bags under the eyes
  • Desire a more refreshed, rejuvenated appearance
  • Desire a natural look

What to Expect

For upper eyelid surgery, the plastic surgeon will make the incision within the natural fold of the eyelid. The incision will be extended outward as much as possible in order to address the extraneous skin folds located on the outside of the upper lid. After the incision is carefully made, the surgeon will remove any excess fat and skin and the incision is closed with sutures.

For lower eyelid surgery, typically two small incisions are placed on the inner surface of the eyelid (transconjunctival blepharoplasty) to allow access to lower lid fat, which is reduce until the bags under the eyes are level with the surrounding skin.  Laser treatments or chemical peels can be added to this procedure to correct wrinkles and a snip excision of skin in patients with severe skin excess.  Fat grafting is also often used to help address a deepening of the tear trough and the transition between lower eyelid skin and cheek skin.  Tightening of eyelid support ligaments is sometimes needed for functional problems and can enhance the aesthetics of the lower lid as well.

With some patients, both the lower and upper eyelids need to be addressed to correct all issues effectively. When both are combined, surgery can last up to 2 hours.

Anticipated Results

Eyelid surgery is usually an outpatient procedure performed with some degree of anesthesia in our accredited surgical facility, In some cases, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia if desired.  After surgery, patients can expect the eyelids to have some bruising and swolling.  The first two to three days after the procedure, cold compresses, lubricating eye ointments or eye drops are used to speed recovery.  Eyelid recovery is usually easy for most patients, and normal non-sports activities can be resumed within a week. Patients should expect natural-looking, younger, more refreshed eyelids after their surgery. In addition, incisions are generally not visible due to their placement.

Revitalize Your Eyes

No longer should you allow your eyes to age you beyond your years. This is the area of the face that people spend the most time looking at when they interact with you and one of the first areas to show noticeable aging changes due to the thin skin.  Blepharoplasty can make you look younger and project the energy you feel.  When you’re ready to transform your eyes and overall appearance, please feel free to give us a call to set up a consultation to learn more about eyelid surgery.
