About Augmentation Surgery
Augmentation mammaplasty or breast augmentation is a procedure which uses an implanted device (breast implant) to enlarge the size of the breast. This is a purely elective procedure performed for the purpose of aesthetically enhancing the appearance and shape of the bustline. New York, NY plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bass is also able to use fat injections for smaller augmentations and shape refinement, presenting another option for certain patients who are not wishing to undergo surgery. The breast implants are constructed of a silicone shell that is filled with sterile saline after insertion; the shape and size of the implants can be customized based on each individual's goals. At Bass Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bass prefers to work with either of the two largest and most widely used manufacturers, Mentor and Allergan, to give his patients the best results possible. He will consult with every patient beforehand to determine the most ideal size for their desired outcome.
Patients who want breast augmentation surgery may be ideal candidates if they meet some of the following criteria:
- They are unhappy with the current size and shape of their breasts
- They have lost the firmness of their breast because of weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding
- One breast is larger than the other
- The size of the breasts are not in proportion to the rest of the body
- Desire to restore the shape of the breasts after a mastectomy or lumpectomy
For patients who are not in need of a full augmentation procedure, fat injections in the breasts can also be an option. During this procedure, Dr. Bass will perform liposuction on other areas of the body such as the stomach, thighs, or buttocks. Once the fat is extracted, it will then be transferred via injections into the breasts. Dr. Bass and the patient can decide on the shape and size, so he can customize the depth and areas of injection based on the patient's needs. There is less downtime associated with fat grafting as opposed to implants. However, the results will not be as dramatic or long lasting. Patients can find out more about which option is right for them by scheduling a consultation at Bass Plastic Surgery.
Breast Augmentation Reviews
"Dr. Bass is absolutely amazing. I have been a patient of his for about 15 years. My surgeries include a facelift and breast implants. No one can tell I had either done. I look beautiful and natural. He continues to treat my skin with Botox and fillers. I trust him. He is very caring, attentive, and addresses all my concerns."- Anonymous / Vitals / Nov 21, 2016
What to Expect
Before a breast augmentation surgery, patients will have a complete physical examination. Overall good health is necessary for a successful result. When deciding which type of implant to use, keep in mind that age can be a determining factor — one of the distinct differences between saline and silicone breast implants is the age restriction. Patients must be 18 years or older of age in order to receive saline implants and at least 21 for silicone. Existing native breast tissue, breast shape, and skin elasticity are other factors to take into consideration. Measurements will be taken of the breasts and the chest wall, including base width, to help determine the best implant type. This evaluation will help the surgeon develop the best breast augmentation plan.
The operation can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the surgical approach selected. Incisions can be placed under the breast fold, around the nipple, or in the armpit area. Dr. Bass performs this procedure in our accredited office operating room or at the local ambulatory surgery facility. Endoscopic techniques are used to help improve the precision of the dissection.
After surgery, patients can expect to feel sore, so they will be given post-surgical care instructions and pain medication may be prescribed. Each augmentation patient will leave in a sports bra and clean surgical dressings. There will be some bruising and swelling for about 1 – 2 weeks. It is recommended for patients to take it easy for those 2 weeks to heal and rebuild strength after surgery. Most patients experience a full recovery between 6 – 8 weeks. Most women find that their breasts look and feel natural within just a few short months.
