About Tummy Tuck Surgery

Abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to improve the shape or appearance of the abdomen. Several changes occur during aging and especially after pregnancy, resulting in excess fat buildup under the skin, loose or sagging skin, and separation of the main muscle bulk of the abdominal wall. Dr. Lawrence Bass, board-certified New York, NY plastic surgeon, can successfully perform a tummy tuck to restore the stomach area after childbirth, weight loss, or natural aging. During a consultation with Dr. Bass at Bass Plastic Surgery, a careful examination will be performed and the most appropriate option can be selected under his guidance. While not an alternative to weight loss, an abdominoplasty can help patients regain their self-confidence and attain a more contoured waistline.

best Candidates

Tummy tuck surgery is life changing for most of our patients who have had the procedure. The ideal candidates for this dramatic transformation are:

  • Women who have C-section scars and/or extra skin and fat deposits in the lower abdomen
  • Men and women who have stretch marks and loose skin on their abdomen
  • Men and women who have had weight loss surgery, have maintained their goal weight for at least a year, and desire removal of the excess skin and remaining fat deposits

What to Expect

A tummy tuck operation restores a more youthful contour to the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening muscle layers of the abdominal wall. This is done using an incision of varying length along the lower border of the abdomen. Endoscopic abdominoplasty, a mini-abdominoplasty, and other more minimal procedures reduce incisions and may be more suitable for the patient's needs than a full abdominoplasty. These procedures are selected when specific areas of the abdomen require improvement or the patient undergoing the procedure possesses fewer cosmetic issues and signs of aging. Careful evaluation is necessary to select the correct procedure. A degree of suction lipectomy (liposuction) is usually performed at the time of abdominoplasty. This can be done less aggressively than a liposuction procedure alone in order to preserve blood supply to the abdominal skin that is being re-draped.

Anticipated Results

The goal of aesthetic surgery is to provide the best appearance possible. The extent of improvement is influenced by a number of factors, such as the condition of the skin, previous sun exposure, underlying bone structure, heredity, and others. Abdominoplasty will remove much of the excess skin in the lower abdomen and some of the excess in the upper abdomen. Stretch marks residing in the lower abdomen will be largely removed. Excess fat will be reduced and a flatter abdominal contour can be obtained. All surgery will leave some scars, but abdominoplasty scars can usually be concealed. After surgery, patients should expect 1 – 2 weeks to return to desk work. Strenuous activities such as sports may be resumed in 4 – 6 weeks. Final settling of the abdomen will take at least 3 months.
