Suction-assisted lipectomy or liposuction is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures in the United States. Liposuction, administered by New York plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Bass, is used to surgically remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. Most commonly treated areas are the neck, flanks (“love handles”), and lateral thighs (“saddle bags”). Other areas treated include cheeks, upper arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction but a method of removing localized fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. If our patients are seeking a way to contour their body and present a more toned physique, then liposuction could be the answer for them. Bass Plastic Surgery is located in Great Neck and Manhattan, NY, where our patients can meet with Dr. Bass to learn more about the surgical technique.
The ideal candidates for liposuction are men and women who:
- Have excess, stubborn fat on their neck or body
- Have tried diet and exercise as a means to lose the fat in this area without success
- Desire a long-term, surgical solution
- Have overall good health
"I had a breast reduction with Dr. Bass in July. Everything from the consultation to the follow up appointments to the office staff was wonderful. I'm so pleased with the results and should've done this years ago. Dr. Bass is attentive and very thorough. The office staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend Dr. Bass!!!"- Anonymous / Vitals / Oct 02, 2017

"Great Surgeon for Male Rhinoplasty - Dr. Bass performed my rhinoplasty along with a medically indicated septoplasty. I'm happy with the results, in terms of both look and function (i.e. snoring is cured, breathing noticeably improved).Male rhinoplasty is a difficult procedure to get right; my understanding is that it has a lower patient satisfaction rate than most cosmetic procedures. Thus, it is especially important to find the right surgeon with the knowledge, skill and experience, who can discuss expectations in a clear and honest manner. I fully recommend Dr. Bass.Dr. Bass is very patient and caring, especially for a surgeon of his renown. Pre-operative consultation was very thorough and he was generous with his time. Recovery from any nasal surgery is unpleasant and good post-operative care is important; again, I'm pleased with his & his staff's empathy and responsiveness. Finally, I'm grateful that Dr. Bass was able to accommodate my schedule and coordinate with her colleague Dr. Franziska Huettner (another outstanding surgeon), so I could have multiple procedures with the downtime of one."- A. / RealSelf / Aug 23, 2020

"professionalism personified... - When i was a younger lad, i was involved in a ghastly vehicular accident that led to life threatening injuries upon myself, along with an unfortunate fatality to the soul of another passenger, which casted an unfortunate lumbering energy that will forever encompass that distant night. after surviving the ordeal, i required a vast amount of plastic surgery to ameliorate all the wounds,..."- N. / RealSelf / Jan 24, 2017
What to Expect
Liposuction is performed in an accredited surgical center or at a local hospital as an outpatient procedure. The surgery generally takes between 1 – 2 hours to complete, depending on how much fat is being addressed and the number of body parts needing treatment. Liposuction can be a surgery all on its own; however, it is usually paired with other surgeries for the best cosmetic results, such as skin tightening procedures. It takes a couple of weeks for patients to recover and scarring is minimal.
Liposuction will soften or flatten areas of focal fat deposit. Small amounts of residual swelling and ongoing healing means that the final improvement may not be fully visible for several months, but it should be long lasting once it is achieved. Patients will not automatically regain fat in the suctioned areas. Rather, if they do gain weight, they are likely to add the weight uniformly over the body. Fat is removed from the deep layers. Superficial fat removal has been associated with increased risk of skin injury and scarring. The goal of liposuction is to provide a pleasing, natural body contour. For these reasons, some fat will remain under the skin after liposuction. If a well-balanced diet is maintained, along with a healthy lifestyle, the results following liposuction surgery can last years.
